A formerly homeless Navy veteran in El Dorado County now has a place to call home thanks to the kindness of many in the community.

Keith Lozier moved into Eskaton Lincoln Manor in Placerville Monday, the first home he has had in years. Read more.

Lozier calls himself a “happy country hippie,” smiling and waving at people at a Cameron Park shopping center. That shopping center parking lot was Lozier’s home for years, and few people knew he was a U.S. Navy veteran.

“I figure I was going to die in a tent for the longest time,” Lozier said.

With the help of several VA groups, volunteers, and donations, Lozier is now an official resident at Eskaton Senior Apartments in Placerville. Read more and watch news video.

Eskaton Village Care Center in Carmichael, CA, has an overall rating of Top Performing. It is a small facility with 35 beds and has nonprofit, corporate ownership. Eskaton Village Care Center is part of a continuing care retirement community. It participates in Medicare and Medicaid.

Eskaton, a nonprofit serving seniors throughout Northern California, will be presenting a traveling art show on Saturday, September 30, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Eskaton Village Grass Valley, 625 Eskaton Circle, Grass Valley, CA. The event will showcase artwork created by residents from Eskaton communities around Northern California.

“We have a very popular art program at Eskaton Village Grass Valley that started five years ago,” explained Michele Ozanich, Director of Resident Services. “It is so inspiring to see what the residents can do.”

For those who cannot attend the September 30 “Sip & Stroll” Open House, or want to further support Eskaton artists, there will be another art exhibition on Saturday, October 14, at Eskaton Lodge Gold River, 11390 Coloma Road, Gold River, CA, from 1-3 p.m. Both events include refreshments, hors d’oeuvres and surprises.

No matter someone’s age, “seniors can continue to learn, encourage each other and inspire others,” concluded Ozanich.

Construction of a Burlingame senior care facility designed to offer specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of memory loss is on schedule and rooms are already being rented, officials said.

Living space in the Trousdale is available on the market, as the 124-room project adjacent to Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame continues to be developed by the Peninsula Health Care District.

District CEO Cheryl Fama said enthusiasm is building as the care center continues to move toward its expected official opening sometime in the early part of 2018. Read more.

Marie Coolidge’s apartment at the Eskaton Monroe Lodge was bathed in soft light on a recent afternoon, her newly installed light bulbs glowing beneath white fabric lamp shades around the living room where she spends most of her time.

The high-tech bulb system, installed last fall at the Land Park senior living community, is designed to provide extra light to residents whose eyesight may be fading as they age. The bulbs change color throughout the day to provide different types of light matching the body’s circadian rhythms, which determine when people should wake, work and rest. The new installation has improved seniors’ moods, helped them sleep and stopped many of them from falling when they wake in the night, according to a study on the project released this spring.

Candice Nutting, the lead housekeeper at Eskaton Village in Grass Valley, was given the Outstanding Team Member award from the California Assisted Living Association.

Awards were given based on their commitment to providing outstanding, quality care and service to residents in the assisted living communities where they work. Nutting will receive her award on June 5.

According to a release from the association, residents and staff describe Nutting as “quiet and unassuming, never one to seek attention,” yet her contributions to residents’ quality of life, overall community culture, and community-at-large are significant. As captain of the wellness committee, she helps residents, family members, and staff to get involved in healthy activities. In addition, she is described as an active participant in area fundraisers, helping to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure and the Relay for Life, among others. Read more.

Eskaton Village Carmichael, a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), is celebrating its 25th anniversary, as well as outstanding satisfaction results. “We are also celebrating a resident who has called Eskaton Village Carmichael home for the past 25 years,” said Executive Director Greg Klick. “In 1992, Chuck Naegeli was one of the first residents to move in.”

“We did the right thing when we moved here,” noted Naegeli. “The staff has taken good care of me.” After Naegeli attended the 25th anniversary black tie celebration at the community, he decided to throw the staff an appreciation party.

Eskaton recently partnered with SMUD, a community-owned and not-for-profit electric service, and Stack, whose light bulbs address circadian rhythm, to launch a technology pilot in order to measure the effect of lighting on older adults. The new pilot will shine a light on seniors to measure their sleep quality and reduction of fall risk.
